Media & Information Literacy

Students gain the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create and use various media-based communication formats. Students interpret messages transmitted through Information and Communications Technology (ICT) including Internet publications, infographics, charts, images, videos, audio recordings and multimedia presentations. They learn to effectively locate, evaluate and use information for research and writing. They determine whether an online source is valid and reliable. They distinguish between fact and opinion; bias and objectivity.  Students exercise communication etiquette as a 21st century skill.

They closely examine a scholarly definition in order to identify the roles in a cyber bullying situation, distinguish cyber bullying from social conflict, and determine the power of the upstander in breaking the cycle.

Students commonly excuse their bullying by saying “it’s only a joke.” This series of lessons helps them understand the difference between humorous and hurtful, and the steps that victims can take to make an action plan against cyber bullying.

This lesson builds upon concepts learned in Grade 3: students identify attributes of bullying behavior; discuss ways to show kindness online; identify ways to prevent and respond to cyber bullying. They put principles into practice by correcting an e-mail that does not show digital etiquette.

Students examine and discuss the risks involved with forming relationships with others online. They come to understand how certain online relationships can be inappropriate and consider the pitfalls associated with forming online relationships. Students develop strategies to protect themselves from developing harmful relationships. As an Empowerment Activity, students create a short form documentary about online relationships.

In this comprehensive unit, students learn that social media is a powerful shaping force in the development of identity and self-concept. They apply the theories of psychologists Carl Rogers and C.H. Cooper to the formation of identity and self-concept. They then determine the safety and security issues that arise from revealing degrees of personal information online.

Students explore the nature of digital communication and give examples for each of the four attributes. They discuss the implications of posting and sharing photos on social media in a moderate to high-risk situation. They examine the intellectual property issues that arise in a media-sharing culture and determine what is safe and legal to download, modify and share in a social networking environment.
