Media & Information Literacy

Students gain the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create and use various media-based communication formats. Students interpret messages transmitted through Information and Communications Technology (ICT) including Internet publications, infographics, charts, images, videos, audio recordings and multimedia presentations. They learn to effectively locate, evaluate and use information for research and writing. They determine whether an online source is valid and reliable. They distinguish between fact and opinion; bias and objectivity.  Students exercise communication etiquette as a 21st century skill.

Students conclude that online ads for pharmaceutical drugs, alcohol and tobacco are inappropriate for youth as exposure to these digital media may lead to substance misuse and abuse. Students use the same persuasive techniques found in online ads to prevent substance abuse among youth and inspire healthy choices.

This unit integrates e-Safety with Health Science as well as drug prevention and awareness programs (e.g. Ribbon Week). Students discover how peer pressure, advertisements and online environments influence youth to engage in substance abuse. The student workbook provides information on the underground network and risks associated with online access to prescription and OTC drugs.

Students examine legal trends concerning the Internet. They crirically evaluate laws concerning issues such as cyber bullying, identity theft and malicious code. They collaborate in groups to discuss and evaluate the laws and their implications. Students take action by drafting a letter to their Congressional member to affect change and recommend solutions. A template is provided.

Students use what they know and understand about online safety to write a story for younger students. They use a variety of narrative techniques to develop the sequence of events including descriptive details and dialogue that reveal characters' thoughts and feelings. Students plan, revise and edit their literary work. They use media or illustrations to aid in comprehension. Digital publication is optional.

Students participate in an anonymous survey regarding educational technology and responsible use. They then discuss the survey responses as a class. Students review the school and classroom Code of Conduct, school/district rules and guidelines for responsible technology use and the consequences for misuse as stated in the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).

Students examine the impact of the Internet on drug use. They weigh the pros and cons of online ads and online access to prescription and OTC drugs. Through collaborative discussion, students identify reasons that youth misuse and abuse OTC and prescription drugs. Students then conduct an anonymous survey, analyze data sets and identify any trends of substance abuse among the sample of survey participants.
