Lesson Overview
Using what they have learned in the previous sections, students will explore and evaluate the negatives and positives that social networking, which includes all forms of online communication, can have on the issues of the online drug culture and substance abuse.
Unit - Substance Abuse Issues in an Online Culture (High School Unit)
This unit integrates e-Safety with Health Science as well as drug prevention and awareness programs (e.g. Ribbon Week). Students discover how peer pressure, advertisements and online environments influence youth to engage in substance abuse. The student workbook provides information on the underground network and risks associated with online access to prescription and OTC drugs.
Lesson - The Online Drug Culture and Social Networking
Students use what they have learned about peer influence, the power of digital media, and the role of online environments to prevent substance abuse among youth. Students evaluate the positive and negative aspects of social networking. They determine the ways that social networking platforms can either promote online drug culture and substance abuse or prevent substance abuse among youth by promoting a positive online culture through youth outreach and empowerment including social media campaigns, PSAs, digital publications, etc.

They conduct a short research project on OTC, prescription and illegal drugs, and they chart the information in a graphic organizer. Students collaboratively discuss their findings. They draw conclusions based on evidence and reason. They then write an opinion piece about the effectiveness of youth drug abuse prevention and education programs.
Lesson - Sorting it Out: Misuse of Prescription Drugs and OTCs
Students examine the impact of the Internet on drug use. They weigh the pros and cons of online ads and online access to prescription and OTC drugs. Through collaborative discussion, students identify reasons that youth misuse and abuse OTC and prescription drugs. Lesson Overview
Students identify the characteristics of an effective AUP.
Unit - Using Acceptable Use Policies as an Educational Tool (6-12)
Acceptable Use Policies are often written in complex legal language. Given that students and parents are responsible for knowing, understanding and agreeing to follow school policies and procedures, this unit aims to familiarize students with the school's AUP. Students examine school guidelines for responsible use of educational technology, consequences for irresponsible choices and procedures for responding to unsafe and inappropriate situations. They then collaborate in projects that promote responsible use of educational technology at school and at home. Visit isafedirect.com for more info.
