Empower students to take control of their personal safety online. In this unit, students examine a true-life stories and personal experiences. They identify online safety issues and determine factors in screen names, passwords and profiles that contribute to safety risks. Students come to understand that revealing identifying information and real-world location online can jeopardize their safety offline and may lead to encounters with those who have harmful intentions. Students develop proactive practices to keep sensitive information private and to protect themselves.

Students learn how an identity forms online. They compare and contrast online and offline identities, examine how online actions and interactions form an online identity, and determine the safety and security issues that result form revealing degrees of identifying information online.

This lesson builds upon concepts learned in Grade 3: students identify attributes of bullying behavior; discuss ways to show kindness online; identify ways to prevent and respond to cyber bullying. They put principles into practice by correcting an e-mail that does not show digital etiquette.

Students examine roles in a cyber bullying situation (victim, bully, bystander, upstander), and develop solutions to prevent and address bullying. They then compose scenarios to illustrate key terms and concepts; using character dialogue to act scenarios through sock puppet alter egos.

2, Primary (K-2)
Students come to understand that people are all are alike in many ways, but also unique. Through discussion and activities, student gain a basic awareness of how bullying can occur online. They relate bullying with cyber bullying, create posters and sign a pledge.
