Media & Information Literacy

Students gain the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create and use various media-based communication formats. Students interpret messages transmitted through Information and Communications Technology (ICT) including Internet publications, infographics, charts, images, videos, audio recordings and multimedia presentations. They learn to effectively locate, evaluate and use information for research and writing. They determine whether an online source is valid and reliable. They distinguish between fact and opinion; bias and objectivity.  Students exercise communication etiquette as a 21st century skill.

They examine the laws that protect creative works from being copied, distributed, performed or changed without proper permission from the rights holder. Students role play a mock trial that exemplifies the real-world consequences for copyright infringement. They also consider the privacy, security, safety and legal risks associated with Peer-to-Peer file-sharing technology. Students use what they have learned to educate others on creative ownership rights in an online culture by producing a Public Service Announcement.

Students explore legal and ethical issues related to music piracy. They discover the economic impact of illegal downloads on the people who work in the entertainment and recording industry, and they determine the personal and legal consequences for unlawfully obtaining or distributing copyrighted music through the Internet. Upon completion of this unit, students create a Public Service Announcement that informs on the risks of piracy and legal alternatives to obtaining music online.

Students review what they have learned about intellectual property. The correlating slideshow presents the definition of intellectual property, copyright laws and protections, fair use guidelines, plagiarism, source citations, and piracy. Students discuss ways to respect and protect intellectual property found online. They then create a media-based project to educate others and raise awareness of digital ethics.

Students come to understand that Homeland Security threats impact school safety. They review their school's emergency action plan and weigh in on its strength and weaknesses. They then recommend improvements to the plan, incorporating references to digital communication channels in both detecting and responding to threats. As an empowerment project, students produce a public service announcement (PSA).

Students come to understand that human trafficking affects students in their age group. Students discover that human trafficking does not only occur abroad; cases occur in urban, suburban and rural neighborhoods of the United States. They examine the role the Internet plays in the recruitment, grooming, and commercial exploitation of trafficking victims. Students research, define, and investigate the issue of human trafficking in their region, and prepare to take action through a student-driven empowerment project. A student workbook and teacher guide is included.
