Background
The Cyber Security lesson unit consists of three separate lessons combined into one unit.
Unit - Grade 6: Cyber Security
Students examine specific types of malware, and they learn how to protect their computers, devices and information security. Students acquire and use technical terms. As an empowerment project, students create a media-based project that educates and empowers others to practice cyber security.
Lesson - Cyber Security and E-mail Protocols
Students come to understand that, by following the proper protocol when using e-mail applications, they can protect their computer or device from security issues. Through close reading of informational text and relevant exercises, students learn how to identify potentially malicious e-mails. Students add to their list of cyber security tips.
Lesson - Risks of Spyware
Students come to understand that spyware compromises personal information security. Through close reading of informational text, students learn how computers and devices become infected with spyware. They also learn how to protect their computers and devices from infection. Students add to their list of cyber security tips.
Lesson - Spam and Scams
Students learn to identify SPAM and scam e-mails through close reading of informational text and collaborative discussion. Students conduct a short research project on SPAM and scam e-mail, and they add to their list of security tips.
Lesson - Cyber Security Review
Students review what they have learned about cyber security. The correlating slideshow addresses topics such as malware, e-mail protocol, Acceptable Use Policies, peer-to-peer file sharing, and the risks of digital downloads including e-mail attachments, online programs and digital content. They then review signs of digital infection and ways to prevent cyber security issues. Students then complete a media-based empowerment project that educates others about cyber security problems and solutions.

Your Goal
Explore the safety issues involved with cyber security and develop a public service announcement to educate
others about the risks of, and legal alternatives to, piracy.
The PSA can be audio, video, or live. Part of the project is locating a broadcast medium.

Students build knowledge and understanding of malware and cybersecurity protocol through close reading of informational text and collaborative discussion. Students also use graphic organizers to aide in comprehension. They practice informed decision-making by responding to a series of cyber security scenarios.
Lesson - Security Risks of P2P File Sharing
Students come to understand that peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and file-sharing technologies pose security risks. They discuss examples of P2P networks, identify security risks and determine ways to prevent security issues.
Lesson - Homeland Security
Students examine the issue of cyber terrorism. They identify ways that the Internet is used in acts of cyber terrorism and cyber warfare. They acquire and use domain-specific terms and concepts such as hacking, steganography, malicious code (i.e. viruses and worms) Students think critically and build upon others' ideas in group discussions. They devise preventative measures against cyber attacks.
