The Internet is a ubiquitous system that is integrated into almost every aspect of 21 st century life: communications, education, healthcare, government, economics, resource management (i.e. water and electricity) and homeland security, but how did we get here? In this lesson, students trace the evolution of the Internet from the Cold War era of the 1950s and 60s to the present. They work in jigsaw groups: each group investigates one decade in Internet history. Students collaborate among their groups to build a timeline that identifies the major events in Internet history.

Students examine the impact of the Internet on drug use. They weigh the pros and cons of online ads and online access to prescription and OTC drugs. Through collaborative discussion, students identify reasons that youth misuse and abuse OTC and prescription drugs. Students then conduct an anonymous survey, analyze data sets and identify any trends of substance abuse among the sample of survey participants.

Students develop media and information literacy skills. They conduct a short research project on medical issues and pharmaceuticals, and they evaluate online information sources. Students come to understand that credible, accurate, reliable sources of information are crucial to support valid scientific research.

Students come to understand that peer pressure can influence youth in both positive and negative ways--even online and through electronic devices. Students examine a true story of a teen who engages in substance abuse due to peer pressure online. Students then write a narrative that illustrates how youth can safely respond to pressure from their peers. They select a target audience and create a poster that helps others deal with peer pressure in a positive way.

Students come to understand that online advertisements aim to influence consumer behaviors. Students conclude that online ads for pharmaceutical drugs, alcohol and tobacco are inappropriate for youth as exposure to these digital media may lead to substance misuse and abuse. Students use the same persuasive techniques found in online ads to prevent substance abuse among youth and inspire healthy choices.

Students use what they have learned about peer influence, the power of digital media, and the role of online environments to prevent substance abuse among youth. Students evaluate the positive and negative aspects of social networking. They determine the ways that social networking platforms can either promote online drug culture and substance abuse or prevent substance abuse among youth by promoting a positive online culture through youth outreach and empowerment including social media campaigns, PSAs, digital publications, etc.

Students define the problem of substance abuse among youth. They determine what their peers need to know and understand about the problem, and they develop a strategy to effectively reach their audience through education and empowerment. The empowerment project may involve a media-based presentation.

This unit integrates e-Safety with Health Science as well as drug prevention and awareness programs (e.g. Ribbon Week). Students discover how peer pressure, advertisements and online environments influence youth to engage in substance abuse.
