Instructions: Closely read the following scenarios. Determine the problems that may result from each person’s online personas and then recommend responsible actions to turn the situation around.

Scenario 1: Mae was teased all through school about her appearance, so she does not think anyone will be interested in her because of the way that she looks. Mae desperately wants to cultivate a romantic relationship, so she finds photos of what she believes is an attractive female, uses the images on her profile, and gives herself a fictitious last name. Mae forms a romantic relationship with an attractive male named John. They correspond with one another for over a year and a half. Then, one day, John asks Mae to meet in person.

Why has Mae created this online persona? How might this persona cause problems for Mae? What do you recommend for Mae to do?

 

Scenario 2: Jaden is a star athlete and a bright student who lives in a neighborhood where tension between racial groups and cliques are high. In order to save himself from harm, he feels that he has to play along with the conflict on social media. His contacts post aggressive comments and some even appear to be affiliated with gangs. Jaden feels that if he does not join in on their conversations that his peers will call him out. During his senior year, Jaden applies for college. He attends an interview in a suit and tie. The college admissions officer looks through his profile. What they find does not match the person that they met in the interview.

Why has Jaden created this this online persona? How might this persona cause problems for Jaden? What do you recommend for Jaden to do?

 

Scenario 3: Tasha is appears shy and reserved in person. She does not speak up in class, nor is she quick to give her opinions in a face-to-face conversation. However, when she goes online, she is socially active and highly opinionated. Tasha writes about the events that happen at school, and regularly posts about the latest gossip. Some of Tasha’s posts have upset a few peers at school. They replied to her posts with angry comments. This caused Tasha to become more reclusive in person, but more defensive online.

Why has Tasha created this online persona? How might this persona cause problems for Tasha? What do you recommend for Tasha to do?

 

Scenario 4: Michael is the pride and joy of his family. His parents are exuberant about his performance at school. He regularly attends worship services with his brothers and sisters. However, Michael has an alternate identity online. He has created a persona as a 32 year old male to engage with others on an adult dating site.

Why has Michael created this online persona? How might this persona cause problems for Michael? What do you recommend for Michael to do?
