Lesson Plan - Social Media and Privacy with Dot & i (Digital)

Description

Description
Dot helps i to understand responsible use of social media while attending a friend’s birthday party. Students learn how to respect others’ privacy and practice safe social networking through this interactive lesson featuring Dot & i. The lesson includes a teacher guide, printable activity pages, and interactive multimedia resources.
Background

Young children are growing up in a connected world. As a result of observing the online activities of parents and older siblings, students in primary grades may already be familiar with social networking sites and apps. The purpose of this lesson is to cultivate an awareness of privacy online. In this lesson, students discover that social media is a way to reach many people at once. Dot and i demonstrate how a single photo can quickly spread across the Internet. Students help i protect his privacy and respect the privacy of his friends by deactivating certain features in his social media app, and by changing settings from public to private.

At this grade level, students are under the age limits for most social media sites and apps. Thus, Verified Parental Consent is required. Parents and teachers can promote and protect child privacy through ISAFE Direct. Learn more at www.isafedirect.com

Lesson Sequence

1. Follow Along: “Social Media and Privacy with Dot & i"
Students listen to the entire story. Tell students to track the words as they follow along.

2. Check for Understanding:
Immediately following the character dialogue between Dot and i, students will engage in a series of
activities that develop an awareness of privacy in social networks. First, students answer questions related
to the central lesson in the story. Then, students practice locating and adjusting privacy features on
i’s social networking profile.

3. Lesson Activity:
After students listen to the story, distribute the activity page. The activity page represents a social networking

to show that they are connected as online community members, and indicate that their profile is set to private.

4. Class Discussion:
After completing the activity, follow up with a class discussion. Invite students to share their PhotoGram
community pages. Then, present the follow-up questions. Tell students to explain their answers.
Follow-Up Questions:
How can you protect your privacy on social media?
Who is a member of your online community?
How do you know each person in your PhotoGram community?
Why is your social media account set to private?

5. Assessment:
Distribute the activity page. Students will answer age-appropriate questions about social media and privacy.
