Media & Information Literacy

Students gain the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create and use various media-based communication formats. Students interpret messages transmitted through Information and Communications Technology (ICT) including Internet publications, infographics, charts, images, videos, audio recordings and multimedia presentations. They learn to effectively locate, evaluate and use information for research and writing. They determine whether an online source is valid and reliable. They distinguish between fact and opinion; bias and objectivity.  Students exercise communication etiquette as a 21st century skill.

In this comprehensive unit, students learn that social media is a powerful shaping force in the development of identity and self-concept. They apply the theories of psychologists Carl Rogers and C.H. Cooper to the formation of identity and self-concept. They then determine the safety and security issues that arise from revealing degrees of personal information online.

This flexible inquiry framework guides students through eight steps of the inquiry process; challenging them to think critically about the exchange of privacy for participation in social networks. Using Facebook as a model, students investigate features and settings, make connections with real-life experiences, and demonstrate a privacy strategy that serves to protect their safety and identity online. They examine a mock-up of a website that reveals personal information, identify the types of information on the site, and conclude the safety risks.
