Text Message Etiquette with Dot & i. Type your name in the box below, and press “Start” to begin.
Slide 2:
Our Focus Question for this lesson is: How do I know if a text message shows good etiquette?
Slide 3:
In this lesson, you will learn how to tell if a message shows good text etiquette by using four basic rules.
Slide 4:
Before we begin, let’s say the four rules of text etiquette together and remember what each rule means. Rule
number 1, “Do not use all capital letters.” It’s just like shouting. Rule number 2, “Use good manners.” Say
“please” and “thank you.” Rule number 3, “Use kind words.” Mean is not funny. Rule number 4, “Use emojis to
show how you feel” because the reader cannot see your face.
Slide 5:
You have listened to the story “Text Message Etiquette with Dot & i.” In the story, Dash and i send text messages
to one another. Some of the text messages show good etiquette while others do not.
Slide 6:
What is etiquette? Etiquette is a set of rules we follow to show respect for other people. (i: I know all about
manners.) It’s a lot like manners. You follow rules of etiquette every day. Think about it. When you ask for
something, you say “please.” When a person gives you something, you say, “Thank you.” When you make a
mistake, you should say, “I am sorry.” If you bump in to someone, you should say, “Excuse me.” When you’re
in the library, you should speak with a “quiet voice.” When people are standing in line, you should not push
your way to the front, you should “wait your turn.” See how much you already know about etiquette? Click
“Next” to continue.
Slide 7:
Now it’s time to have some fun with Dot & i by playing a game. Here’s how to play. You will focus on one rule
at a time. Each rule of etiquette has 2 levels and a bonus round. Complete 2 levels and the bonus round to
move on to the next rule.
Slide 8:
For Level 1, you will: listen to the rule; look at the clues to help you choose; find the text messages that do or
do not follow the rule, and make your choice.
Slide 9:
Level 2 is called “Let’s Practice.” You will need your practice worksheet for this activity. Listen to the narrator.
When you hear the narrator’s voice tell you to find a number, look for the matching number on your worksheet.
Then, follow the directions. The narrator will show you how to change text messages so that they show
good etiquette. When your worksheet is complete, give it to your teacher.
Slide 10:
Level 3 is a Bonus Round. Choose the right answer to the question, and you will advance to the next rule of
etiquette. Click “Back” to hear the instructions again. Click “Continue” when you are ready to play!

capitals. i: It’s the same as shouting.)

Level 2 “Let’s Practice.” Now we are going to help i change his text messages so that they follow rule number 1,
“Do not use all capital letters.” Follow along on your worksheet, and listen for the matching number.
{{start}}
Number 1: What changes can we make to this text message? First, i uses all capital letters. Next, i uses too
many letters to spell, “Hi, Dash.” Last, i uses three exclamation points. That is too many. To the person reading
this text, it seems like i is shouting.
{{show result}}
These are the changes that we need to make for number 1. First, we will use a capital “H” at the beginning of
the sentence. Next, we will use a capital “D” for Dash because that is her name. Last, we will end the message
with a period. Copy this new text message on your worksheet. When you are ready, click the button to move
on to the next text message.
{{next}}
Number 2: What changes do we need to make to this text message? First, i uses all capital letters. Next, i uses
exclamation points. Last, when Dash reads this text message out loud, she may read in this tone {{irritated/angry}}
“Okay! I will send one now!” Dash might think that i is upset.
{{show result}}
These are the changes that we need to make for number 2. Write the answer on your worksheet. First, begin
with a capital “O” for “okay.” The following letters--k, a, and y--are lowercase. Next, change the exclamation
point to a period. Last, begin the full sentence with a capital “I” and end with a period so that the sentence
reads in a friendly tone, “I will send one now.” Click the button to move to the next text message.
{{next}}
Number 3: What changes do we need to make to this text message? We see that i uses all capital letters again.
This time, he is asking Dash a question, “How do you like my photo?”
{{show result}}
These are the changes that we need to make for number 3. First, change the text message so that it begins with
a capital “H.” Since i is asking Dash a question, end this text with a question mark. Write the new text on your
worksheet. Click “Next” when you are ready to move on.

Number 4: What changes do we need to make to this text message? Try this one on your own. Then, click the
button to see the answer.

First, begin the text message with a capital “W.” Then, end with a question mark. Click “Next” to continue.
Click “Back” to repeat this activity.
Slide 17:
Level 3 Bonus Round. Choose the best answer to the question below. Why do we follow Rule #1? “Do not use
all capital letters?” A) We should only use lowercase letters. B) A text in all capital letters is just like shouting.
Choose your answer and click “Submit.”

Slide 18:
Let’s review rule number 2 together. “Use good manners.” (Dot: Use good manners. i: Say “please” and “thank
you.”)

“Use good manners.” Follow along on your worksheet. Listen for the matching number.
{{start}}
Number 5: What changes can we make to this text message? Let’s read it together. “I want a photo of you. Send
one to me!” This is a text from Dash. Hmmm... her text message could use some good manners. First, instead
of telling i to send a photo, she should ask politely. Next, what word can she use to show good manners?
{{show result}}
These are the changes that we need to make for number 5. First, we need to turn the sentence, “Send one to
me!” into a question. Next, whenever we ask for something, we should use good manners and say, “please.”
Let’s read the changes we’ve made together. “Will you please send one to me?” Now doesn’t that sound more
polite? Write the new text message on your worksheet next to number 5. Click “Next” to move on to the next
text message.
{{next}}
Number 6: What changes can we make to this text message so that it shows good manners? Let’s read it together.

make this text message sound more polite?
{{show result}}
This is the change that we need to make for number 6. By using the word “please,” we show good manners.
Let’s read the new text message together. “Please stop shouting.” Polite words like “please” and “thank you”
make a big difference when we use them in our text messages. Write this new text message on your worksheet
next to number and click “next” when you are ready to move on.

on your worksheet. Listen for the matching number.
Number 11: Is this an example of a kind text? Let’s read it together, “That is not a good photo!” Hmmm... let’s
change this text message so that it does not hurt i’s feelings. First, we know that Dash sent i this message because
his photo was blurry. Instead of telling i that his photo is not good, Dash should let i know that his face
is hard to see. Click the button to see the new text message.
