They determine the identity of chatroom participants though close analysis of screen names, and note the screen names that would be of particular interest to an online predator. They review key characteristics of the grooming process and devise techniques to reduce personal safety risks involved with online relationships by incorporating information delivered through the multimedia presentation and discussion.

Students review the concepts of community and citizenship, and they build upon their understanding of online communities and digital citizenship in a collaborative class discussion. They then listen to a narrative that describes how the central character gets lost online, yet is able to return to the appropriate website and after asking for help from his parent. Students come to understand that citizens belong to physical and digital communities and that community rules and guidelines help to keep citizens safe. Students acquire and use terms related to technology.

As part of i-SAFE’s Music and Movement series of lessons, students will have fun moving to the song, “Ask an Adult (When You Login),” and will gain an understanding of a basic Internet safety concept – ask an adult to help while online. Through collaborative class discussion, they learn about challenges to safety online, through the use of computers, smartphones and other Internet-ready devices.

Students relate online privacy to personal safety in a class discussion about age-appropriate sites and apps. Through exploration of online registration forms and profiles, students discover the importance of following age requirements (COPPA) and protecting online identity. Students create a mock-up of a safe and secure online profile as part of their Empowerment Project: the designe of a virtual world called Sock Puppet Nation.
